A little more about percentage calculations

A percentage represents a fraction or proportion out of 100. The term comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred". Percentages provide an intuitive way to compare ratios, price discounts, interest rates, and growth margins across different scales.

How do you find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the part (X) by the whole (Y), then multiply the resulting decimal by 100. For example, if you scored 45 out of 60 on a test: (45 ÷ 60) × 100 = 0.75 × 100 = 75%.

How is percentage change (increase or decrease) calculated?

Subtract the original starting value from the new final value, divide that difference by the absolute starting value, and multiply by 100: ((New − Original) ÷ |Original|) × 100. A positive result indicates growth; a negative result represents a decline.
